Introduction

Baotou High-Tech Park (BTHTP) is located in Baotou, which is a key industrial city in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The Park was established in September 1990 and was approved by the State Council as a state-level high-tech park in November 1992. It is also called China's Rare Earth Valley as the reserves of rare earth in Baotou accounts for 97% of the national total, and 77% of the world's total.

Baotou is located in midwestern Inner Mongolia facing the Yellow River and 700 km from Beijing. It has a strategic position along the transportation route between Inner Mongolia and Ningxia.

The high-tech park is 6 km from the railway station and 16 km from the civilian airport. Railways connect Baotou to Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Ningbo, Yinchuan, Lanzhou, Taiyuan, Xi'an, Wuhan and other Chinese cities. National Highway No. 110 and 210 run through the city.

The total land area of the Park is 49 km2. In the Park, there is a university science park, a science and technology zone and China's first incubation zone for rare earth enterprises.

Relationships have been established between the Park and several universities and research institutes, such as Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Engineering and Inner Mongolia University.

Investment Climate

BTHTP focuses on industrial sectors like rare earth products, information technologies, metallurgical technologies, new materials, light industry and food processing.

Rare earth with high purity is the key raw material for laser crystal products, optical cable, luminescent materials, optical glass, some electronic products and many other high-tech products. BTHTP will play a more important role in the R&D of rare earth products, as well as in its production in the future.

By the end of 2003, there were more than 1,000 enterprises registered in BTHTP. In 2003, its GDP reached RMB 6 billion (USD 730 million), 70% higher than in 2002.

There are over 100 research institutes in Baotou, including two state-level ones, namely, Baotou Rare Earth Institute and China Weaponry No. 52 Institute. Baotou University of Iron & Steel Technology is located in the city where over 100,000 technical professionals and more than 500,000 experienced employees live.
