BTHTP focuses on industrial
sectors like rare earth products, information
technologies, metallurgical technologies, new
materials, light industry and food processing.
Rare earth with high purity is the key raw
material for laser crystal products, optical
cable, luminescent materials, optical glass, some
electronic products and many other high-tech
products. BTHTP will play a more important role in
the R&D of rare earth products, as well as in
its production in the future.
By the end of 2003, there were more than
1,000 enterprises registered in BTHTP. In 2003,
its GDP reached RMB 6 billion (USD 730 million),
70% higher than in 2002.
There are over 100 research institutes in
Baotou, including two state-level ones, namely,
Baotou Rare Earth Institute and China Weaponry No.
52 Institute. Baotou University of Iron &
Steel Technology is located in the city where over
100,000 technical professionals and more than
500,000 experienced employees live.
