ASTM A517 Grade E quenched and tempered alloy steel plate for boilers and other pressure vessels

Detailed

ASTM A517 Grade E quenched and tempered alloy steel plate for boilers and other pressure vessels

General Product Description

ASTM A517 Grade E is a high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate intended for pressure vessel applications. A517 Grade E is available in thicknesses up to 6.0 inches and has a minimum yield strength of 100 ksi up to 2.5 inches in thickness and 90 ksi for plates greater than 2.5 inches to 6 inches in thickness. ASTM A517 Grade E also has required Charpy V-notch impact property requirements.

Applications

Typical applications for A517 Grade E include unfired pressure vessels and tanks.

1) Refer to ASTM A20/A20M for Elongation adjustments based on plate thickness.

2) Reduction in area for 1.5 inches wide rectangular tension specimen. For plate thicknesses of 0.750 inches and less, the test specimen must be a 1.5 inch wide rectangular specimen.

3) Reduction in area for 0.5 inch wide round tension specimen.

Mechanical Testing

Charpy V-Notch Impact Properties: A transverse Charpy V-notch lateral expansion of 0.015" [0.38 mm] in individual specimens is required. The test temperature shall be agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser. Please inquire for required Charpy V-notch test temperature and for other specified minimum impact property requirements. All test temperatures must be specified on each purchase order.

Tolerances

Thickness, width and length tolerances for ASTM A517 Grade E steel plate are in accordance with the requirements of ASTM A20. The flatness tolerance for thicknesses of 0.188 inches to 0.500 inches for as-supplied product is 1/2 Standard ASTM A20. Flatness tolerances for thicknesses greater than 0.500 inches is 6mm/m.

Weldability

Welding of A517 Grade E shall be performed in accordance with the applicable welding code. Special welding consumables and welding procedures may be needed to meet specific requirements for a given application. Low hydrogen practices are strongly recommended, including the removal of surface moisture. A517 Grade E may be susceptible to reheat cracking in the heat-affected zone of welds during stress relieving or postweld heat treatment. As a result, SHUNFU recommends that a qualified welding engineer consider this potential before stress relieving weldments of this product. For additional welding information, please contact your SHUNFU representative.
